Parrot Tulips
“When making the Parrot Tulips print I was inspired by a few references. The rich drama and detail of Dutch flower paintings, Robert Mapplethorpe’s beautiful drooping vases of tulips, and Oscar Wilde’s description of Dorian Grey’s Mayfair drawing room: “Some large blue china jars and parrot-tulips were ranged on the mantelshelf, and through the small leaded panes of the window streamed the apricot-coloured light of a summer day in London.” There used to be a flower seller at the weekly market around the corner from me, and every Saturday early I would fall out of bed, and put £10 in my pocket to go and see what he had. It felt a bit like choosing sweets with pocket money. Sometimes there were treasures and sometimes not. I lucked out with this beautiful display of perfect white parrot tulips.”
