Eric Ravilious was Born in Acton, London in 1903, but spent his childhood in Eastbourne in East Sussex. He was awarded a scholarship to the Eastbourne School of Art in 1919. Three years later, he enrolled at the Royal College of Art in London where he studied under Paul Nash, a War Artist during the First World War and later in the Second World War.

In the following years, Ravilious established his reputation as a painter, designer, illustrator and wood engraver. He was appointed as an official War Artist in 1940.

From 1940 to 1942, Ravilious produced some spectacular work including watercolours, lithographs and drawings featuring ships and aircrafts. He was the first British War Artist to die on active service in World War II when the aircraft he was in was lost off Iceland on 2nd September 1942.
