Better Never Means Better for Everyone

“This is a giclée print of my original painting which portrays a reader engrossed in Margaret Atwood's novel The Handmaid's Tale. The phrase "better never means better for everyone; it always means worse, for some" is a quote from the book.

Atwood’s novel highlights oppression and power dynamics, showing societal changes benefiting elites at others' expense, especially impacting women's freedoms and rights. In the film version of The Handmaid's Tale, the winged eye emblem symbolizes the constant surveillance by the secret police, the “Eyes of God”. I designed a tablecloth pattern inspired by this symbol, placed beneath the book looking up at the reader. As Atwood’s novel becomes increasing prophetic the lotus design I’ve used in the curtains calls for women to stand united in resilience, strength and growth.”

Please note that works can only be collected when the exhibition ends on February 10th.
