Royal Chhatris

“Chhatris are raised onion dome-shaped pavilions in Indian architecture, which are part of funerary sites. They contain elements of Hindu as well as Mughal architecture. The term "chhatri" means umbrella or canopy. In Rajasthan, chhatris are built on the cremation sites of wealthy or distinguished individuals. In some places, the interior of the chhatri is painted with stories and motifs.

The Chhatri is an important recurring theme in my work. It is a defining element of Rajasthan's architecture, the structural leitmotif of Northern India. Exotic to Western eyes, they are signifiers of India, of Hindu and Moghul built design. But they are far more than that. Chhatris are incredibly evocative of culture and people. To stand beneath the domes, watching the shadows lengthen, they resonate with melancholy and celebration, joy and pride. Those conflicting emotions are expressed through the contrasting colours that I take from everyday life, in this piece deep temple blues with brilliant daylight beyond.”
