The red spider lily flower originally came to Japan from China in about 700 AD. As they bloom around the autumn equinox, they have become a cultural symbol of the arrival of autumn. In the world of mezzotint printing technique, Hamanishi is known internationally as the “artist’s artist”, thanks to his advanced skill.

Katsunori Hamanishi (b. 1949) is an esteemed Mezzotint printmaker, who has taken the technique to a new standard. Over the years he has developed ways of incorporating colour and gold and silver leaf into his prints, which gives them added impact. He was born in Hokkaido, the most northerly island of Japan, and now lives in Kanagawa Prefecture.
