Shiomi says, “I have admired Georgia O’Keeffe’s life and work since I was young in Japan. She gazed at her beloved things, especially flowers. I wanted to see my version of flowers. The Japanese Morning Glory have unusual, irregular patterns, and the flowers remain in my heart. I wanted to dedicate my new pieces to those who lost someone near and celebrate the lives of the people who were recently departed. We all have to go one day, but I believe in the power of nature. All living creatures naturally live their lives to the fullest. It is a precious thing.”

Nana Shiomi (b. 1956) works in the traditional Japanese woodblock technique. Her works often explore the theme of duality – of opposites and contrasts, and many shine a new light on symbols of Japanese culture. She lives and works in London.
