Starting from objects closely connected with Japanese culture, in this series Shiomi invites the viewer to interpret their own meaning of the images, by creating their own combinations and associations.
No. 95 depicts a mask that is used in Noh, a form of traditional Japanese theatre. The Hannya Mask represents a jealous female demon. As the play progresses different masks are used to envision different emotions of the character.
Nana Shiomi (b. 1956) works in the traditional Japanese woodblock technique. Her works often explore the theme of duality – of opposites and contrasts, and many shine a new light on symbols of Japanese culture. She lives and works in London.

Contemporary artwork Works can be collected from Watts Gallery, Compton, GU3 1DQ. We can arrange delivery however the cost will vary depending on the destination, size, weight and value of the artwork. Some works cannot be delivered due to their size or fragility.
