This publication accompanies Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village’s current exhibition ‘Uncommon Power’: Lucy & Catherine Madox Brown (28 September 2021 – 20 February 2022).
‘Uncommon Power’ is the first exhibition dedicated to sister-artists Lucy Rossetti (1843-1894) and Catherine Hueffer (1850-1927). Exhibiting between 1869 to 1875, the sisters received significant critical attention during their lifetimes, yet they remain relatively unknown today. Exploring their upbringing, training, reception and legacy, the exhibition and its accompanying publication aims to set the sister-artists centre-stage, and in doing so, to reclaim their place in the history of Pre-Raphaelitism.
