In the Heian Period (794-1185 AD), aristocrats often decorated fans with poetry and drawings. These fans were sometimes floated down a river by ladies of the court as love letters. The fans here depict the Four Seasons floating along a river.

Katsunori Hamanishi (b. 1949) is an esteemed Mezzotint printmaker, who has taken the technique to a new standard. Over the years he has developed ways of incorporating colour and gold and silver leaf into his prints, which gives them added impact. He was born in Hokkaido, the most northerly island of Japan, and now lives in Kanagawa Prefecture.
