Jane Browne gained a BA in Woven Textiles at West Surrey College of Art & Design (now UCA) specializing in tapestry weaving, where she was taught by the eminent tapestry weaver Archie Brennan. Her love of landscape tapestry dates from this time. Her work has featured in Good Housekeeping and on the cover of The Architectural Review. She has exhibited in Surrey Artists Open Studios and her work is regularly on show at Farnham Pottery. Jane's ideas come from wandering in the countryside where she lives on the Surrey/Hampshire border. She sketches whatever inspires her and is fascinated by the effect of shapes and patterns made by farming throughout the year, seen in combination with the natural contours of the landscape and the myriad textures each plant or crop creates.

“Tapestry weaving is a very slow process. The loom is very simple and threading is quick. The time is taken to build the picture, starting at the bottom and working up to the top. This is both the joy and sometimes the frustration of the method as the pleasure and freedom of creating the picture, slowly building colours, shapes and textures can be tempered by the amount of time taken to achieve a relatively small amount. A lot of un-picking takes place too, if a particular technique or colour is not satisfactory! I use a great variety of different yarns, blending thick and thin, course and fine together to gather the effect.”

Favourite local places

I am inspired by the same place time after time, seeing the same view from all angles. Particular favourites are Newlands Corner and the fields surrounding Crondall village
