Ruth Taylor trained as a textile artist at West Surrey College of Art and Design in the 1980s. After some years working with fabric in various forms, making quilts and cushions, she began to experiment with oil paints. The landscapes she produced were quickly picked up by galleries and she now has paintings in galleries around the country. She has been a keen participant in Surrey Artists Open Studios as well as organising pop-up exhibitions with a group of fellow artists and craftspeople

“My training as a textiles designer is evident in my work. My paintings are inspired as much by a love of colour and texture as by the English countryside, the heathlands and estuaries as well as the South Downs landscape of my childhood. I work in oils, applying the paint directly on to the board, moving it around with brushes, cloths and even my hands, looking to capture a particular light or the effect of the seasons and weather on the land. My work comes from the images in my head as opposed to photographs or sketches which allows me to play with the shapes and colours as the fancy takes me.”

Favourite local places

I am fortunate to live close to Frensham Common, where the colours of the gorse, ling and bracken all inspire my pallette. Frensham Ponds is also a constant inspiration with its low mists, reed beds and beaches. The reflections on the water of the moon and the sun are a gift to an artist.
