Diana Croft trained at Canterbury College of Art and Brighton University where she studied illustration and discovered the fascinating world of printmaking. She now specialises in linocuts and collagraphs. Her work is inspired by her surroundings, especially the rolling landscape of the Surrey Hills. She interprets this into stylised colourful prints emphasising and exaggerating the patterns inherent in the landscape. She has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad including a solo show at the Watts Gallery in 2018, and has been a finalist in the Surrey Artist of the Year in 2015 and 2019. She is a long-standing member of the Greenwich Printmakers co-operative and a coordinator for the Surrey Artists Open Studios scheme.

“At the moment I am obsessed with reduction linocuts which require a high degree of technical skill. I enjoy the challenge of planning the colours and working in reverse, as the printed image is the mirror image of the image on the lino block. Registration is critical when printing several colours so that all elements of the design line up correctly. I try not to use more than six colours in my prints. During lockdown l found great comfort in making linocuts and they became increasingly more detailed as I lost myself in the distraction of the technique - a great way to forget what was happening in the world.”

Favourite local places

Ranmore hillside near Dorking is a constant inspiration to me in all seasons. I love the dramatic sweep of the hills and the expansive views to Leith Hill and beyond.

Leith Hill is another inspiration with the strong vertical image of the tower high on the hill - a dramatic focus encircled by trees.
