Carolyn Genders (b.1957) is an established ceramic artist and printmaker based in Sussex. She studied at Brighton Polytechnic and trained in Ceramics at Goldsmiths College, London, before setting up her studio in 1980. Genders is a Member of the International Academy of Ceramics, a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association and a Member of Contemporary Applied Arts. She exhibits nationally and internationally, and her work is represented widely in private and public collections, including the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; Gladstone Museum, Stoke on Trent; Museum of Modern Ceramic Art, Gifu, Japan; Varazdin Museum, Croatia; Cologne Museum, Germany and Keramiekcentrum, Tiendschuur, Netherlands.
Genders is known for her ceramic sculptural vessels and unique relief prints. Her works are informed by a practice of looking and seeing, and the interplay of form, line, brushstroke and colour, inspired by evolving patterns of her immediate surroundings. Gender also explores mark-marking through inscribing, incising and scarifying through layers of matt vitreous slips and burnished terra sigillata. In her relief prints, she uses the same investigative and experimental layering to achieve lustrous, colourful surfaces.
