Grace Ellen is a self-taught, professional artist. Born in Surrey in 1993, Grace spent her childhood years walking in the Surrey Hills and visiting Cornwall and the Lake District. This inspired her love of the outdoors and led to her studying Animal Behaviour and Ecology at Exeter University. Learning about conservation motivated Grace to start painting landscapes and she continues to draw inspiration from the great diversity in British nature and wildlife. Recent prizes include the Visitors Choice awards at both Bath Art Fair and Surrey Contemporary Art Fair. She was also voted as a finalist for the ‘Surrey Artist of the Year’ competition based on her open studio solo show Light and Land.

“My paintings are a romanticised take on reality, I aim to immerse the viewer in the scene and share my experiences of the great outdoors. I begin with taking hundreds of photographs in each location, and then narrow it down to one or two which are most evocative of my visit on that day. I am drawn to strong light and movement. I often use texture mediums and heavy body acrylics to add a subtle impasto surface to the painting. My main challenge is the unpredictable British weather! There are only so many days of sunlight.”

Favourite local places

River Mole - one of our most unspoilt local rivers. I'm inspired by the dramatic changes seen between seasons giving a range of colours and textures to explore.

Box Hill - I love the wide open viewpoint and far stretching views - the North Downs way is full of beautiful tree-framed vistas and there's always a path you've not yet been down!
