Russell Herron - Mary

pencil on paper
framed size: 44 x 32cm

These works intentionally play around with identity - about how identity can slip around, how it isn’t as fixed as we might think. Given that they are being exhibited at Watts Gallery it would be perfectly reasonable to assume that they reference Mr and Mrs Watts. But in another venue, at another time, they could be referring to King George V and Queen Mary. Or, elsewhere, they could be a comment on Mary Ann Evans writing under the pseudonym George Eliot. Or they might reference George Michael singing ‘As’ with Mary J. Blige.
