Robert Greenhalf is one of the UK’s leading wildlife artists. He trained at Eastbourne School of Art and Maidstone College of Art, graduating with a degree in Graphic Design in 1971. Greenhalf initially specialised in landscape watercolours and etchings, but today his subjects are primarily birds and wildlife. Using oils and watercolours, he paints from life creating lively and spontaneous images. In 1981, Greehalf was elected a member of the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA) and has exhibited with them at the Mall Galleries in London every year since. In 1992, he was invited to join an international group of wildlife artists from the newly formed Artists for Nature Foundation for a project in north-east Poland. This was the first of a number of such projects abroad, most of which have resulted in books and travelling exhibitions of the work produced by the participating artists. The aim of Artists for Nature Foundation is to use art to focus attention on areas of the world where Wildlife and natural habitats are under threat from development of various kinds. Greenhalf has now participated in projects across Europe and in India and Senegal.
Greenhalf lives overlooking Romney Marsh in Rye, East Sussex, and gathers inspiration for his paintings from nearby Rye Harbour and Dungeness. He has contributed images and words to more than twenty books and publications. His first book, Towards the Sea - an illustrated diary of his work throughout the year - was published in 1999 and is now out of print. Greenhalf has exhibited widely across the UK, USA and Canada and has work in numerous public and private collections worldwide.
