Robert Gillmor MBE is a renowned artist, ornithologist, author and editor. He was a founding member of the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA). Born in 1936, he attended the School of Fine Art at Reading University. His illustrations first appeared in the magazine British Birds when he was just 16 years old. His grandfather, Professor Allen W. Seaby (1867-1953), instilled in him a passion for wildlife, and for printmaking. In 1965, Gillmor embarked on a full time career as a freelance wildlife artist. After helping to found SWLA in the 1960s, he served as its Secretary and Chairman for many years. He was elected President in 1984, a role he fulfilled for ten years. In 1998, Robert relocated to Cley in Norfolk, a move that inspired him to return to his love of linocut prints. As a keen ornithologist, he has served on the council for the RSPB, British Ornithologists’ Union and the British Trust for Ornitholoy. Gillmor also designed the first version of the RSPB’s Avocet logo.

In 2018, Gillmor was taken ill and as a result, is no longer able to make linocut prints. His daughter Emily suggested he try silk screen printing instead and he immediately began producing artwork. In 2019, Gillmor and his daughter collaborated on 28 new screen prints. He is currently working on a new set of prints and writing a book about his experiences. Gillmor was awarded the MBE for services to Wildlife Art in The Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2015.
