Richard Spare is a Master printmaker. He studied painting at Maidstone College of Art in the 1970s and has editioned work for many contemporary artists including David Hockney, Robert Ryman and Keith Haring. In 1977, he worked as David Hockney’s assistant, setting up an etching studio for him. In 1988, Spare also spent several months in New York working with Jasper Johns, proofing and editioning complex carborundum prints. Today, Spare concentrates solely on his own practice, which derives from nature and his extensive travel, including 12 years spent travelling throughout Japan - which has had a lasting influence on his practice. Spare draws straight onto copper and attempts to capture the unique character of the subject. Each print is an original interpretation, individually printed by hand, and hand painted. Spare finds the rich velvet blacks of the drypoint line against the pure pigment a vibrant and inspiring combination.
Spare has exhibited internationally throughout his career. He is a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and twice-invited exhibitor at the ING Discerning Eye exhibition at the Mall Galleries. Solo international shows include a series of annual exhibitions throughout Japan, spanning fifteen years. He has also had solo shows in Ballarat and Daylesford, Victoria, Australia. He has been Guest International Artist at the Toorak Village Art Affair, Melbourne. Spare's work appears in many collections worldwide including V&A Museum, British Library, University of Durham, Aston University, Maidstone Museum, Chelmsford Museum, Imperial Health Charity, Art in Healthcare, Leeds Art Gallery Picture Library, Museum of London, Royal Cornwall Museum, University College Hospitals Trust, Penlee House Gallery and Museum, The Central and Regional Library of Berlin and Federation University Australia.
