Marsh Harrier- Richard Allen
30cm x 30cm
Richard Allen is an artist and illustrator. He completed an Art Foundation at Brighton followed by a degree in Graphic Illustration at Kingston Polytechnic. After graduating in 1987, Allen became a freelance illustrator working in advertising, publishing and newspaper. However, with a growing interest in birds and wildlife, he shifted his career to focus on his artistic practice and went on to win the ‘British Birds: Bird Illustrator of the Year’ in 1993. He moved to Wivenhoe on the Essex Coast in 1988 and continued to be inspired by the bird rich estuaries and marshes, regularly field sketching and working outdoors. Now living in Berkshire, Allen writes, ‘I enjoy the immediately of working directly from nature, trying to capture the life and vitality of wild birds and the patterns of plumage, light, water and foliage’.
Allen has illustrated numerous books, most recently Coastal Birds and Garden Birds, published by Jardine Press and Birds of Paradise & Bowerbirds published by Bloomsbury in 2020. He has also created illustrations for the RSPB, National Trust, Exmoor NP and several sets of stamps for countries around the UK. Allen was elected as a Member of the Society of Wildlife Artists in 2016 and regularly exhibits at their annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London.
