Rachel Sumner is a textile artist and sculptor. She grew up in a small market town in Northamptonshire and spent much of her childhood exploring the surrounding countryside. After a decade living in rural France, she moved to the North Devon coast, where she has been based for the last twenty years. These experiences of different landscapes inform her work, which she describes as ‘celebratory, often capturing a moment and inspired by the natural world’.

Sumner trained at Northampton School of Art and Maidstone College of Art, where she graduated with a BA in Fine Art. She spent many years hand painting bespoke textiles before embarking on a career as an embroidery artist. After moving to Devon and regularly collecting flotsam and jetsam on walks, she started to create mixed media boat, fish and bird sculptures. Sumner has exhibited throughout the UK, selling her work through galleries including the Lantic Gallery and The Burton Art Gallery & Museum, both in Devon. She was a regular exhibitor at Art in Action and the Contemporary Craft Fair. Sumner’s work has been featured in publications including Embroidery and the Landscape Magazine. Her book Stitched Textiles: Birds was published by Search Press in 2016.
