Ali Tomlin (b.1964) is a Surrey based potter who creates colourful wheel-thrown porcelain. She studied Graphic Design at Kingston University before going on to have a graphic and branding business in central London for twenty years. After undertaking a part-time course at Putney School of Art, she began to combine her interest in mark-marking to that of shaping forms in clay on a wheel. Tomlin became a Selected Member of the Craft Potters Association in 2017 and is a Member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. She has won numerous awards for her work, including for Best Thrown Piece at the London Potters exhibition, Morley College, London. She has exhibited widely and regularly shows work at Ceramic Art London, Affordable Art Fair and with galleries including the Contemporary Ceramics Centre.

Tomlin’s work is a collection of thrown, uncluttered porcelain forms. Focusing on the smooth, white surface, she creates clean, elegant shapes as canvasses for decoration. She uses stains, oxides and slips, splashing or sponging away areas, inlaying lines and monoprinting directly onto vessels, aiming to produce imperfect and unpredictable marks. Tomlin is drawn to a palette of strong but muted colours and uses decoration to explore movement and spontaneity in her work. She leaves most of her pots unglazed, giving the porcelain a paper-like, tactile quality.
