Roger attended at Kingston-upon-Thames University, studying graphic design. He worked in this field successfully for 10 years, creating among other things the Wall’s ice cream logo and Formula 1 identity. He and his wife decided to leave London in 2000 and return to where Roger was born and raised in Suffolk, enabling him to concentrate on his own fine art practice full time. His sculptures have been described as timeless suggestions of human forms, evoking a biblical era but with the modernity of Henry Moore.

MY SCULPTURAL INSPIRATION
I started out as a painter and evolved into sculpture over time. I moved through collage and three-dimensional collage into fully 3D work. I am drawn to using found river and sea wood which has a previous life and story to tell. Although the wood I find has mostly been worked by man, nature has reclaimed it and shaped it over time. I am giving it back life and soul in the form of the human form, by re-shaping and carving.
When working on groups of figures, I have in mind the recent migration of people from troubled lands. The river where I find the wood is, of course, a great conduit for the movement of people and spreading of cultures.

WHERE I WORK
The estuaries and coastline of Suffolk have been my inspiration for a number of years. Whether it’s searching for wood worn by time at low tide, or collecting fragments from boat yards, these are relics of a time gone by.
