Jane Silk is a ceramicist. She trained at Berkshire College of Art and Design before studying Ceramics at Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, graduating in 1973. Since then, she has continued to develop her work alongside a career in teaching. Silk’s artistic practice is concerned with a sculptural approach to the natural world, inspired by her love of the outdoors. Her works are predominantly hand built with a focus on textural surface qualities, colour variations and the effects achieved through experimentation with complex layers of treatments. She works with a range of clay bodies, slips, oxides and glazes. In her bird forms, Silk draws on the essential qualities of birds, their personalities and behaviours, rendered with affection and humour.

Silk’s works have been exhibited across the UK, most recently at the New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham, Surrey, Padstow Gallery, Cornwall and at Twenty Twenty Gallery in Shropshire. Later this year, she will exhibit new works at Moncrieff Bray Gallery in West Sussex. In 2018, Silk was a finalist for Surrey Artist of the Year.
