Janina Klein is a self-taught mixed-media artist currently based in Guildford, having grown up in the rural county of Herefordshire. She has drawn and painted throughout her life but only in latter years in a more professional capacity when she has exhibited with Royal Society of British Artists at the Mall Gallery, London and regularly as an exhibiting member of Guildford, Woking and Pirbright Art Clubs. She has also taken part in the Surrey Open Studios event which runs in June of each year. Artists open their studio, kitchens or garden sheds to the public in order to share, sell and talk about their art.

“I have a particular passion for drawing and painting with inks, both acrylic and traditional, using splatters and loose marks with sprayed water to create atmosphere and applying it with toothbrushes, sticks, old-fashioned dip pens, scrunched-up paper and twigs to create expressive marks and contours. With this comes the need to accept the results of serendipity and sometimes disappointment when the ink has run off in the wrong direction! As a mixed-media artist I also use watercolour, metal leafing, alcohol inks, pastels, gesso and acrylic paints, working in a free style to interpret my response in an impressionistic way.”

Favourite local places

I am inspired by the trees, plants and landscape around me, valuing this proximity even more through lockdown, noticing the smaller views, clearings and edges of the woodlands that have been my local walks around Merrow and West Clandon.
