Corner of the Artist's Studio with Paintbox on Window Chair - Phoebe Willetts-Dickenson

£4,750.00

Phoebe Willetts-Dickinson (1917-1978)
Corner of the Artist’s Studio with Paintbox on a Windsor Chair
Oil on canvas, late 1930s

With all the trappings of a makeshift studio, this painting suggests the fragile state of many artists’ work spaces. This is probably an early work, possibly from her days as an art student in Birmingham or at the Royal Academy Schools in London.
Phoebe Willetts-Dickins was a lifelong campaigner for peace, social justice and the ordination of women. She spent six months in prison for taking part in a nuclear disarmament protest in April 1960. In 1966 she was ordained as a Deaconess in the Church of England, and defied Church authority in 1978 to become the first female to concelebrate communion in an English parish church.
