Jennifer Johkoo - originally from New Zealand - works from her home studio in the Surrey Hills. She studied Fine Art at Canterbury University (NZ) and initially planned to major in Painting. After becoming transfixed by zinc plate etching she switched to Printmaking! She went on to complete a degree in Secondary teaching and has taught in New Zealand, Spain and the UK. In 2011 Jennifer joined the London Print Studio and was elected a member of Greenwich Printmakers in 2012 and an Associate member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art in 2016. She has recently joined the Printmakers council.

“I work in relief and intaglio methods, however my preferred printmaking technique is reduction linoprinting - otherwise known as the suicide method! In this method a multi-coloured print is pulled from a single block. The lino is inked with the lightest colour and the first printing is made. The areas to remain that colour are then cut away. This is the process for each layer, so it cannot be rewound or repeated. As a result my editions are kept very small. It is complex, but it enables a certain degree of flexibility as the print evolves and changes shape during the process.

Favourite local places

Headley Heath is a favourite place, the terrain is so varied – woodland, steep hills, flat heathland and ponds. I particularly love to sketch and paint the countless silver birch trees and bracken ferns as the colours graduate from green/yellow to tawny brown during the winter months.

Boxhill - despite its popularity, it’s always possible to find a quiet spot amongst the mossy trees. I especially enjoy depicting hillside views and wide skies - subjects I always return to. There is no better place to see vast sunset skies.
