Jennifer Watt
Jennifer was born in Dumfries and graduated at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. She lived in Lincolnshire for 27 years before returning to her home in Dumfries & Galloway. Her sculptural work consists of pieces in many mediums, but she mostly produces limited editions in resin and bronze. Jennifer has exhibited regularly at Visual Arts Scotland in Edinburgh, where she won the Powderhall Bronze Award in 2007. She has also won the Inverarity One to One Travel Award (from The Society of Scottish Artists) and the West College Scotland Award for Sculpture. Many of her elegant figures celebrate women and motherhood.

I did quite a lot of sculpture at art college and started woodcarving when I was raising my children. I aim to create work which achieves an emotional response. I am moved by simple forms, clean and void of any unnecessary components. I work mostly in cement and clay, which are then cast in either bronze or resin in limited editions. I find the biggest challenge is learning to stand back from my work. Sometimes you get too close to see it properly. If I cover it over and leave it for a day, when I come back I can see it as others do.

I work in my studio in Dumfries & Galloway – a very beautiful part of the country. I am inspired by the natural organic forms of the surrounding landscape, but also by the long shadows of the South of France on my visits there. I started to take photos of people’s shadows and really noticed how they reduce their forms to such an elegant simplicity.
