Jane Muir
Jane attended Epsom School of Art and Design and went on to study for a BA at Central School of Art and Design in London and an MA at the Royal College of Art. In 1992 she took a three-year artist in residence post at a Sixth Form College and exhibited widely, including at the V&A. In 1997 she was awarded a Crafts Council Grant which helped in setting up her present studio in Peckham, London.
Jane’s whimsical figures are all hand-built and hand-painted using stoneware glazes. Scale varies from small intimate pieces to large-scale garden sculptures. She was commissioned by Bishop’s Stortford Library to create two large pieces based on Mozart’s Magic Flute.

I found an affinity with clay at an early age, going to pottery classes at a local oast house. I was then lucky enough to study pottery at school, taking both O and A Level exams. At college I learnt skills while working on given projects and I enjoyed the challenge of finding solutions to briefs set. This way of working helped me develop an eye in deciding what may or may not be successful, something which has been a very important part in building a career. Challenges have been various, keeping up with demand can be stressful, keeping up with technology even more so!

I have worked in my studio in Peckham for 25 years. I work alone which can be quite isolating at times, however there are nine arches occupied by a variety of artists/craftspeople, so lots of tea-breaks, lunches, sharing of skill, materials, tools and advice! Our three Open Studios a year, which have become more and more successful, and have helped us build a good relationship with the local community .
