Contemporary Art: Creative Spaces

A selection of works from our current exhibition in the Watts Contemporary Gallery (6th May - 19th June 2022) featuring artists in the early decades of the 20th century.

Virginia Woolf famously wrote that you needed “a room of one’s own” to create. Sometimes this is just not possible. For artists without a financial cushion, or for those who lacked the time or the freedom to work elsewhere, home and studio were – and still are – often interchangeable. Working space and domestic space collide not only in the physical sense but in the creative sense too.  These artists’ subjects are the things they hold dearest - the objects and people that surround them, and the resulting works give an intensely personal insight into the way they perceive and depict the world closest to them.
